Have you been thinking about learning a new craft? Maybe how to needle felt? Or crochet? Or maybe you’re interested in helping your children learn a crafting skill, but simply aren’t sure where to start. Starting a new craft can be an overwhelming process. You have to gather the correct supplies, plan your project and learn the skills needed to bring it to life.

A kit is the perfect place to start. They contain all of the supplies you need, plus detailed instructions. Once you find a craft that calls your name, you don’t need to do all the digging to find the supplies and tools you need or go on a Pinterest deep dive for instructions. It all comes packaged up and ready for you to get your hands crafting.

We carry many different kits from several amazing makers. First up, Wee Things Fiber Arts. These kits are created in the home studio of Rachel Beaupré, all from natural material and fibers, often using upcycled items like wool and cashmere sweaters. They come in so many different lovable creations, from bunnies to knights to mermaids. These kits are all based around sewing, and the instructions even give you the details and instructions for all the basic stitches.

Another brand we carry is Felted Sky. This small, family run business was started when founder Elizabeth Whitton discovered needle felting after her daughter began attending a Waldorf school. They create needle felting kits that contain all the wool roving, needles, felting mat and clearly written instructions. Needle felting is a very forgiving and meditative craft. Once you’ve done your first project it’s hard not to imagine the innumerable creations just waiting to be made.

Next up is Friendly Loom - a small, family owned textile business offering crafting supplies and kits made in the United States. We were drawn to them because their products are made of only natural materials. They have a deep commitment to supporting community, historical mills, and the sustainable processes behind them. Friendly Loom creates many different textile craft kits, from knitting, to crochet, to pot holder looms to weaving and more. Start with the basics and build your skills as you go.

One last brand to highlight is Natural Earth Paint - an eco art supply maker founded by artist and mother, Leah Fanning. To protect her baby’s health, Leah ditched all the toxic art supplies in her studio - anything with fillers, heavy metals, additives, and petrochemicals. She began creating her own paints using pigments from the nature around her, and after realizing even the majority of children’s art supplies were using unsafe ingredients, she decided to launch Natural Earth Paint. They are a company dedicated to making “completely safe, sustainable, and radiant art supplies for children through professional artists.” It’s truly amazing how vivid and beautiful colors created from the earth are, and the life they bring to art. We carry many of their supplies like finger paint, milk paint, face paint and even their new entirely plant based acrylics. Did you know typical acrylics are made not only with petrochemicals? So every time a rinse jar and brushes are washed out, microplastics are going down the drain and back into the environment? We are proud to carry Natural Earth Paint’s Acrylik Paint - a safer, and just as flexible and beautiful answer to this problem.

We hope you’ll spend a little time this summer learning a new craft!
